Food Allergies: What I Eat in a Day

Food allergies, at least in my case, can become quite complicated as they constantly change. Mostly, I have to stay away from wheat, rice, and corn. Those foods consistently lead to unwanted reactions. I can get away with eating small portions of dairy, tomato, garlic, and onion.

Always reading food labels

Overall, I always need to be mindful of what I eat, especially since wheat is seemingly everywhere! Reading ingredient labels is a constant for me, as well as asking questions whenever ordering out. You eventually get used to the new norms and adjust accordingly.

Everyone's allergy experience is different

We are all so different regarding food allergies, so it would be interesting to walk you through a typical day of my allergies and what I usually eat in a day's worth of meals. Through sharing, we can perhaps inspire new meals for others.

A typical wheat-free breakfast

So let's start with breakfast. I tend to have a small breakfast when I wake up. Lately, I have prepared a grain-free bagel toasted with butter for breakfast. I buy grain-free bagels from Trader Joe's, and they have no wheat. They taste as close to a typical bagel, which is a plus!

I use Kerrygold butter to spread on top of the toasted bagel. When it comes to dairy, I can have a little here and there, and this butter is perfect for me.

Finally, I'll prepare some fresh fruit on the side, like grapes, strawberries, blueberries or mango.

Tacos are a lunchtime favorite

For lunch, one of my favorite meals is homemade tacos. I buy wheat-free soft taco shells. For the filling, I cook ground turkey and season it with mild seasoning. This seasoning comes in a packet and is so easy to use.

I then top my tacos with a pinch of organic shredded cheese, scallions, and guacamole. I love this lunch! It is filling and tastes amazing.

Baked fish for dinner

For dinner, I always try to eat fish. I buy frozen fish from a store called Wild Fork. I tend only to buy Haddock and Cod, which are more mild-tasting white fish options.

Ironically, I never used to like fish much, but it usually sits well with me when I eat it. I dislike a "fishy" taste and prefer mild-tasting white fish. I add the fish into the oven, frozen and pre-seasoned. Then, I prepare a side salad with oil and vinegar, walnuts, dried cranberries, and beets. To round out the meal, I'll make roasted vegetables or potatoes.

A late-night bonus snack

As a late-night snack, I'll open a jar of almond butter and eat a spoonful to fill me up before bed. I always tend to get hungry before I fall asleep.

Again, we are all so different when it comes to food allergies, so what I eat may not work for you at all, but on the flip side, there may be many of you in the community that can tolerate the foods I eat and can use this as a new idea for your meals.
