Oral Allergy Syndrome Triggers

Hello,

I have been diagnosed with Oral Allergy Syndrome (OAS). My allergy tests came back negative to nuts, pollen, grass, wheat and soy. However I have discovered that with regards to OAS there is no reaction to standard allergy tests. Because of this I am somewhat in the dark as to the root cause of my symptoms.

However, because one of my worst reactions was to pears I suspect I am allergic to tree pollen and because of this I cross-react with Potato, Sweetcorn and Soya Sauce. My diet is pretty limited at the moment and I am currently trying to figure out what I can eat, but I have to admit I am not having much luck.

Does anyone have experience with OAS and what other foods could be potential triggers?

Any help will be much appreciated 😀

  1. Hi, !

I am not aware of another community member that has shared about their experience with OAS, but that doesn't mean they aren't here! And I do hope any members familiar with this particular allergy will see your post and chime in. We do have some basic information on OAS, which you are welcome to check out -- https://allergies.net/food/oral-syndrome. It does some helpful breakdowns on pollen allergies and the food families that you might be allergic to. Honestly, I didn't even know about the pollen families and how they are categorized, so it was good information for me to review!

I think narrowing down the allergens and then researching all the foods that may contain those allergens can be a daunting task (especially with corn and soy allergies, since our food manufacturers love to put those two ingredients in everything), but you can do it! You might find some great information about safe foods in specific communities dedicated to food allergies. I know there's a significant difference between OAS and standard food allergies/intolerances, but those communities will have a wealth of resources that can possibly save you time and research as you try to find foods that are safe for you to consume.

Again, check out the link I shared and see if it helps and I hope you are able to get some help from community members here or in another dedicated allergy community!

    Best, Erin, Team Member.
