Allergies Causing Ear Pain

Has anyone else experienced ear pain caused by allergies? This has happened to me a few times. I'm wondering how common it is.

A couple of weeks ago, I developed pain in my left ear. This followed a day of intense sinus inflammation and pain, which are my typical allergy symptoms. The ear pain persisted for a week and eventually affected both of my ears. The pain worsened with certain activities like driving and going outside. Lying down lessened the pain some.

During that week, I was traveling and not able to see my primary care doctor. But I told a nurse about the ear pain the following week. I was surprised to hear the nurse had experienced something similar.

I would like to hear about others' experience with ear pain related to allergies. Do certain allergens trigger the ear pain? What do you do to ease the pain?

  1. I am new to your community) But I want to say that I also have similar allergy symptoms (((But what saves me is that I do not panic when such exacerbations occur, but immediately contact my doctor. He writes a step-by-step plan of action for me and I faithfully follow all his recommendations. It's just that I've been afraid of self-medication all my life, so I strongly advise everyone to find a reliable doctor and treat any problems under his supervision) Be healthy everyone!!!

    1. , I'm glad you took the time to share this with ! I think more information can be helpful and just knowing other people understand what you are going through can be really comforting. Not that we want anyone to experience allergies and the unpleasant issues they can cause, but it's nice to know you're not alone!

Thanks again for sharing and you be healthy, too!

    2. I am glad you have a reliable doctor you can reach out to when you have symptoms. A detailed action plan is so helpful! I have a really doctor too that I contact when I have new or recurring symptoms. Her guidance and treatment help me tremendously.

  2. I also join the club of ear pain from allergies. November, for some reason is my worst month for being dizzy and having ear pain. Astelin helps, but makes me very tired unable to function. My hearing is also affected. I use astelin and heat pad and hope the pain goes away. I also do dizzy spinning exercises. Not a fun thing to put up with.

    1. I'm so sorry to hear about your ear pain! Your symptoms sound so challenging to manage, but I'm glad you've found some forms of relief. May I ask if you've spoken with your doctor about this? I'd be curious to know what they recommend. All the best, Alexa (Allergies.net moderator)

  3. I struggle, with intermittent ear pain, and mast cell activation disorder. I truly believe that the two things are connected. Perhaps the inflammation, caused by the MCAS, triggers the ear pain?

    1. , that's a pretty interesting hypothesis and I am glad you shared it here! I, too, now wonder if they're connected. Thanks for bringing this up!

  4. New to this forum, first time posting. First, a list order of symptoms. Started maybe six years ago. Raging tinnitus and pain right ear, vision disturbances, sinus pain and pressure on right side, swelling and itching under right ear, facial itching, post nasal drip, adverse response to prednisone, acquired anxiety, mental cloudiness and confusion. I'm almost certain I'm missing some things. I figured I have developed an extreme allergic reaction to dairy coffee creamer!! Maybe an ingredient? I still tolerate cheese so far. 🤷 Feels like my brain /body is rebooting. Pending biopsies for dx of EoE.
