7 month old baby reaction/ rash after Greek yoghurt

My 7 month old baby is exclusively breast fed, I eat plenty of dairy in my diet and he has never shown any signs of gastro issues but he has had a persistent rash on his chin and upper chest since he was about 3 months. I gave him Greek yoghurt to try as he is now on solids and he straight away broke out in a bumpy red itchy rash down his chin with a few raised spots around his mouth. He was quite lethargic and very irritated by the rash. All calmed down within about 15 mins but it leads me to question if he could have a skin allergy on contract with cows milk? Is there such a thing? If so then maybe that is the reason for the rash on his face - from the cows milk protein that would be in my own breastmilk? Not sure and would love some advice, thanks in advance

  1. Hi, ! First off, congratulations on your baby! My oldest child just had her first baby in May and I am loving being around a baby again.

Second, to your question; if you haven't done so already, you can definitely bring this up at your baby's next well visit. I will say that babies are prone to baby acne and general skin reactions that are (almost always) no big deal. If he is drooling a lot, that could be the rash culprit. If he is a messy eater (my grandson is), the dampness from leaking milk can cause a rash, too. It could be heat related from contact with your skin/body during nursing, too.

So, basically, it could be a number of different things. You could definitely be on to something with the contact rash from the yogurt. I would definitely check with your doctor before proceeding, but some doctors and allergists will recommend testing again on the skin. I do caution doing it with your doctor's knowledge and approval, just in case the reaction is more pronounced this time around. And, to answer your question, you can definitely have a contact reaction to dairy products and it is frequently an indicator to dairy sensitivity/allergy, so keep that in mind.

I hope this turns out to be a one time thing, but I think you're smart to be so attentive and on top of things. It sounds like you're a good mom!

Good luck and I hope any further adventures in introducing new foods to your baby goes smoothly and there are no more reactions!
