Methotrexate

hello all, my 5 years old has just been prescribed Methotrexate to manage very severe allergies, eczema and asthma. I was wondering is anyone else has experience with this particular drug and how have you found it?
I am very grateful for any comments on this as we are in two minds about it.

  1. Hi, !

While I am familiar with Methotrexate as a treatment, I have to admit that I wasn't aware it could be used to treat allergies and eczema. I did a little research and learned (as you already) knew that it can be used to treat severe allergies when other treatment options have not worked.

Methotrexate is a bit of a heavy hitter as a medication and when it works, it's pretty darned awesome. It does come with some scary potential side effects and I assume your daughter's doctor/allergist will be closely monitoring her to make sure any side effects she experiences can be managed or the treatment can be stopped if necessary.

Methotrexate is commonly used to manage autoimmune conditions, including Rheumatoid Arthritis, Multiple Sclerosis, Lupus, etc. And, honestly, that's where my knowledge of the drug comes from -- autoimmune conditions. Methotrexate can suppress the immune system, so you and your daughter may need to be extra cautious when viruses are circulating in your community (cold and flu season, for example).

I want to share some information on Methotrexate from our sister site dedicated to Rheumatoid Arthritis. Please keep in mind that the listed side effects do seem pretty scary. I assume your daughter's doctor is suggesting this treatment because others haven't worked and I bet you had a conversation about the potential risks and benefits of this particular medication. So, please take my input (and the information on Methotrexate) with a grain of salt -- https://rheumatoidarthritis.net/treatment/methotrexate. I'm a mother, too and I think you will know what is best for your daughter. When Methotrexate works for a person, it really works well. But, for some individuals, it's just not a good fit. I do hope that it works well for your daughter and brings her some relief from her allergies and eczema!

    Best, Erin, Team Member.
